K udos to Delta for making a policy and sticking with it.
The plane took off from Detroit for a flight to Atlanta, and when the passengers refused to comply with the instructions from the flight attendant to wear a mask , the pilot turned the plane around.
Delta is also calling BS on people who claim to have a medical condition that keeps them from wearing a mask. If a passenger claims an exemption, they must complete a telephone interview by STAT-MD, a company that “provides inflight emergency consultation as well as fitness-to-fly ground screening. ”
The way I see it, this is more than Delta ensuring the safety of other passengers. They are ensuring the health of their entire business.

Not sure of the details, but it seems like a giant waste of time and $ : is Delta they letting people boarding without a mask, or did a passenger wearing mask decide to take it off while in flight ?

Yes, more details needed. Agreed it was an expensive choice, but don’t make a policy unless you are prepared to enforce it.

I'd guess the latter.

This whole thing sounds like it went down like a standoff between a dad and a toddler on a roadtrip .
Consider your bluff called, you ignorant prick (the passenger, not the toddler).

And for once, the dad won.

I love the medical exemption bit. the reasons for not being able to tolerate a mask are few and sever enough that you probably ought not to be flying. In the event you do have a condition and NEED to fly, it’ s a PITA, but it does allow you to actually do it.

FO was like “Hon, I know you’re mad, but can’t we just let it go so we can have a nice flight?”
Captain: “I’m tired of letting things go, they need to learn a lesson!”

From what Im hearing, people will put it on, sit down, and then refuse to keep it on either full or part way...or to quickly slip it on when the attendant comes by hoping no one will rat them out.
A coworker of mine was on a flight recently this happened on. The person refused to wear it, then was told “you are required to wear it, do I need to go and get someone?” at which point she wore it, but only when the attendant was looking.
These people are hoping to call the airlines bluff. Delta made the right call as it’ s a reminder to people that they aren’t bluffing. I don’t want to be stuck somewhere with no options but to breath someone else’ s potentially deadly air simply because they want to make a point or it makes it a little stuffy for them .

This is fantastic. These people need to be shamed into doing what’s right.

Yeah, like you are somehow perfectly able to walk through the terminal without passing out and yet you aren't able to sit in a seat with slight discomfort only perceptible because you choose to dwell on it, so you don't have a medical condition.

We always stood ready to abandon whatever task we were doing in order to enforce our rules. If it was both of us, one would remove the child from the situation and the other would keep going. If it was one of us alone, the child would be removed from the situation. Several shopping carts were abandoned over the years . Our apologies to the owners of the establishments.

They need to be sent the bill.

Also, flight was going to Atlanta. Any reason to turn around is a good one.
![]() 07/27/2020 at 13:26 |

Well, to be fair, 80% of Delta planes in the sky at any time are headed to Atlanta. It defies statistical logic.

Flying is enough of an exposure risk as it is. Not wanting to be the guy next to the maskless guy with the quiet (its just an alergy) cough.

100% agree with the policy, just curious how that unfolded.
If you can wear a mask to board, then take it off, it’s a case of sabotage. Y ou should be charged with the extra fuel used for the whole plane flying back to the departure gate. That’d teach’em ...

as far as I remember reading, this person should now be banned from Delta for life as per their policy. That stinks

The people that do this probably grew up with parents who always bluffed and never followed through on punishments. Guess it's never too late to learn.

Realistically, yeah, with a severe lower respiratory virus going around, if you really can’t handle wearing a face mask for awhile, you probably really shouldn’t be out of the house at all right now.
For the rest of us, yeah, they're annoying, they ride up constantly, trap heat, and make you break out in acne (which, at least, no one can see, because of the mask). But, suck it up, wear it when you have to, take it off as soon as you don't (e.g., when you get back to your own car or house). On the plus side, they do make you look younger, apparently, I've been getting carded more frequently since the rule went into effect.

Basically, doing what they should have been doing all along for “ emotional support llamas” and the like. Got a legit medical need? Then you should have no trouble proving it, or gtfo.

Stat md is the go to for inflight medical emergencies until they can get on the ground. Thorough folks. I’ve used them once before, luckily only once.

What stinks? Airlines should share their ban lists! Stinks for everyone else on the flight!
![]() 07/27/2020 at 14:07 |

Alternatively: we need to
make it legal for passengers to deliver beatings to fellow passengers who aren’t following the rules.
Good on Delta for sticking to the rules.

oh I agree. I don’t mean to sound sympathetic but being banned from an airline should be sufficiently painful to discourage this kind of behaviour.

How great would this be?
“Ladies and gentlemen, due to the insufferable prick in 18B refusing to wear a mask per regulations , the captain is turning the aircraft around and we will be arriving back in Detroit in 45 minutes. Feel free to express your feelings to this misguided young man at your convenience . ”

Sounds like plane spotting at DFW.

Every time I look at Kayak or Google Flights from BHM to anywhere in the western US, it’s always through DFW.
( Or Hobby for SWA, but that’s a separate search because Southwest doesn’t play silly games with travel aggregators .)
I don’t mind it...sure beats ATL, CLT, or ORD. I fundamentally hate going in the wrong direction to my final destination, it’s just a pet peeve.

You misspelled prick
![]() 07/27/2020 at 16:56 |

Southwest also does not fly to DFW. They only fly to Love Field (DAL). When booking American from Austin, you have to fly to DFW first. I once tried booking direct from Dallas, thinking I could drive up there to save some money. The price was the same, with or without the AUS-DFW leg.

Good old Wright Amendment...sheesh.
Yes, BHM is often like that with ATL on Delta. 2.5 hours of driving, or a 40 minute flight (which is still 2.5 hours with local traffic and TSA). The time and cost is basically a wash, but sometimes you can get lucky and find things cheaper from the smaller airport, despite the fact that more fuel is used and more crew hours are spent. Totally illogical, but they want to fill those seats.

Newark is better than both Detroit and Atlanta.

Detroit maybe (never been there) but Atlanta?
![]() 07/27/2020 at 17:43 |

Eh....been there many times, just not a destination for me. Prefer to see this when I look out the window when I land.
Though, there is a new PEC right near ATL, so you do have that over the NYC area.
